Finite Element Analysis

Design Optimization with Finite Element Analysis

T
o successfully deploy new products, you have to move quickly to get an edge in the market. And while product life cycles get ever shorter, the cost of warranty and service is on the rise. The traditional design-prototype-test approach to new product development can be slow and inefficient when problems are encountered.

Advanced Technologies Group, Inc. uses Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to accurately model products and processes. Our techniques can measure performance, reliability, wear points and predict failures long before you commit to tooling or start to build.

Design Optimization
Our goal is to reduce product development costs and improve quality. FEA helps solve design challenges without arduous manual iterations or prototyping.

Solution Verification and Validation
Experienced mechanical engineers verify all FEA findings against empirical test data, simplified models, and classical calculations to ensure accuracy. 3-D modeling is also used to validate designs.

Computational Fluid Dynamics

Fluid-flow Simulation
Translate analysis design goals into numerical criteria and iteration numbers.

  • Engineering goal-based flow analysis.

  • Compare different designs based on flow analysis using configurations and choose the optimal design for final production.

  • A wizard-based approach to set up flow problems.

  • Automatic generation of fluid volume based on your assembly. No need to create fluid volume as a separate component.

  • All flow parameters are associative with your geometry and automatically update with changes in your design.

Physical models for engineering applications.
Analyze a wide range of real fluids such as air, water, juice, ice cream, honey, plastic melts, toothpaste, and blood, which makes it ideal for engineers in nearly every industry.

  • Internal flow: Flow of liquids and gases through valves, regulators, and ducts.

  • External flow: Flow of liquids and gases around solid bodies like flow of air over an airplane or flow of water around a submarine.

  • Transient flow: Simulate unsteady flow over a short period of time.

  • Turbulent flow: K-E model to understand turbulence in the flow domain, for example, the flow of gases from an aircraft engine nozzle.

  • Incompressible viscous flow.

  • Compressible flow: Analyze gas flows in subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speed zones like flow around an aircraft engine moving at the speed of Mach 1.

  • Heat transfer: conduction, convection (natural and forced convection).

  • Radiation: Study heat transfer exchange between high temperature surfaces and also radiation from the sun (solar radiation).

  • Wall roughness: Calculate pressure drop on pipes based on its surface roughness

  • CFD-based design optimization: Optimize your design based on model dimensions and flow parameters.

  • Porous media: Simulate components like industrial filters or catalytic converters to understand how they affect your designs.

  • Non-Newtonian liquids: Solve flow problems involving liquids like blood, toothpaste, and plastic melt.

  • Moving wall: Study flows relative to a moving reference frame.

  • Rotating reference frame: Understand complex rotational flow inside turbomachinery (like pumps and impellers).

  • Cavitation: Identify areas in the model where cavitation will occur.

ATG utilizes Lambda Research’s TracePro. TracePro is unique in its analysis capabilities. It can be used in a wide spectrum of applications in the optical, illumination and stray light fields. TracePro has special features for quickly modeling and analyzing many of today's cutting-edge products. Applications include:

  • Lighting, Luminaire And Source Modeling using LEDs, arc lamps, and fluorescent and incandescent sources in all types of reflector and lens configurations. Design troffers, diffusers and free-form reflectors, and perform Fresnel and faceted designs.

  • Information Display Systems using front lighting and back lighting techniques, particularly for computer and cell phone displays, LCD projection systems and light pipe integrated solutions. Model brightness enhancement films, prismatic diffusers and millions of repetitive surfaces as scattering media.

  • Machine Vision Systems that are designed to detect defects in printed circuit boards, robotic applications, scanners and quality assurance systems.

  • Aerospace And Defense Systems where stray light, narcissus, ghost and thermal effects may jeopardize image quality. TracePro is extremely useful in designing and analyzing baffles, telescopes and imaging systems, integrating spheres, spectrometers and infrared systems.

  • Stray Light Analysis TracePro is the perfect program to analyze stray light in any optical system, it's easy to see inside a system for problem areas where light is scattered, reflected, refracted and absorbed.

  • Medical Systems involving the bulk scatter of light through human tissue, imaging systems, spectral quantification, arthroscopes, glucometers, endoscopes, curettes, otoscopes and systems using multimode and GRIN fibers.

  • Automotive Lighting Systems, including overhead lamps, CHMSLs, HUDs, headlamps, taillamps, faceted reflectors, speedometer needles and display panels.
  • Laser Cavity Design using volume flux analysis to determine optimal design.
  • Consumer Electronics Systems where light is either focused or scattered to create a display device or indicator light. Typical applications include CD ROMs, DVD players, digital and personal cameras, video systems and toys.
